俗话说:人靠衣裳马靠鞍,菩萨也要金镂装。对于跑者(运动员)来讲,最重要的东西除了身体之外,莫过于装备。

2019.4.25,作为大红大紫的Nike ZoomX Vaporfly 4%跑鞋的升级款,Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%跑鞋正式在伦敦发售,售价275美元,约合人民币1850元。在大中华区看到上新后,果断入手了一双来感受一下地表最强跑鞋。

在此之前,我跑步不管是参加比赛还是平常训练,基本都穿asics,作为亚瑟士的死忠粉,别的跑鞋也都穿过一些,但在上脚ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 之后,感觉只剩两个字来形容:惊艳。突然想起之前有位上脚一双含ZoomX 科技的Nike Pegasus 35 Turbo 的朋友跟曾说:我人生穿跑鞋,分遇到ZoomX 之前与之后。

275美元是我所知的最贵的跑鞋价格,如果你必须拥有一双最好的跑鞋,那就把钱花在全新的ZoomX Vaporfly Next%上吧。

本文分为三部分:ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 介绍(以下简称Next%);Vaporfly 4%和NEXT%诞生的渊源以及耐克的跑鞋矩阵。

地表最强跑鞋——ZoomX Vaporfly Next%

NEXT%是从Vaporfly 4%改进而来。耐克在今年发布新一代的ZoomX 跑鞋前,在媒体的口中,这双鞋被称为"Vaporfly 5%",意为在去年的 4% 字义上更进一步,跑者们向着人类极限更进一步。后来Nike宣布下一代ZoomX 新款跑鞋被命名为ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%,取"前路无限,下一个1% 会一直在你前方" 的字义。

这个4%是指通过科学试验得出,与之前最快的市售跑鞋产品Zoom Streak 6相比,Vaporfly 4% 所需的跑步能量减少4%。4%看起来很少,但对于3h马拉松跑者来说,能有6分钟的提升,4h选手,就是近8分钟,吸引力可见一斑。

那具体而言,NEXT%做了哪些改进和提升呢?

Vaporweave鞋面

NEXT%在设计之初听取了世界冠军们的反馈:莎拉尼·弗拉纳甘向耐克反馈,她在波马比赛中遭遇暴雨,跑鞋吸收雨水后重量增加,从而降低了跑步速度;而基普乔格也在柏马后表示,希望能够进一步提升跑鞋的抓地力,以更好地应对潮湿的比赛环境。基于反馈,耐克设计研发团队,首次采用了Vaporweave的材质作为鞋面,这种类蝉翼的材质相比Flyknit 更加轻薄透气,且更重要的是,它在比赛过程中能有效抵御汗水和雨水的过度吸收,长时间保持透气和干爽。

全新的鞋带孔设计

NEXT%的鞋带眼处进行了改良设计,以减轻该部分对于脚背的压力,看似细微的改进,却能在长距离的跑步中获得巨大的提升,这一设计也深受莫·法拉的喜爱。

加垫泡棉结构

小腿后侧的阿基里斯腱,是跑者最需要保护的部位之一,NEXT%在鞋身新增一层薄薄的加垫泡棉包裹足部,在长距离跑步过程中保护阿基里斯腱,避免造成摩擦刺激。

降低前后掌高度,增加中底厚度

鞋身的前后掌的高低差从之前的11mm降低为NEXT%8mm,降低前后掌高低差的设计能让穿着者拥有更加稳定的跑步体验和更强的能量反馈。而增加了中底的整体厚度,耐克通过实验室结合多位精英运动员的测试表明,能有效增强能量反馈。

ZoomX泡棉增加15% 且保留铲型碳板

NEXT%比4%鞋底更厚,瞬间推离离开地面,更加的q弹,更加的缓震。NEXT%保留了内置全掌铲型碳纤维板并增加了碳板硬度,以此为跑者带来长时间的推进力。中底泡棉增加了15%,但重量几乎不变。ZoomX材质的增加不仅能够带来更好的缓震体验,同时也能带来出色的反馈性能。

相比于4%,Nike对NEXT%的大底做了改造,类似于汽车轮胎的大底纹路,轮廓线很深。采用波状花纹的设计,也是为了之前冠军们的反馈:为能在潮湿及积水路面拥有更好的抓地力,更深的凹槽纹路也让在穿着者在转弯的过程中有更为稳定的体验。更深的凹槽能够让跑者在转弯的时候更加灵活稳定地左右移动。

NEXT%对于大众跑者而言是PB神器还是难以驾驭?一直众说纷纭。坦白讲,实话实说,ZOOM X的形变程度和使用寿命一直被人所诟病。Nike这次没有对这方面进行提升和改进:由于全长碳板的推进性,这款鞋不适合没有经过专业训练的人穿着。意味着NEXT%与4%一样,只能作为比赛用鞋,更加适合水平较高的跑者,比如全马时间在4h内的跑者,对于速度较慢的跑者可能并不是十分适合。

不过话又说回来,可能对于很多人来讲,也舍不得拿来每天压马路,虽然脚感爆棚。日常训练和穿着建议Pegasus足够,相比于4%只是少了块碳板。目前Pegasus turbo官网1399,二级市场还能更便宜一些,普通脚型按照自己的码数购买即可。

NEXT%——Nike破2计划的下经典产物

跑步领域对于运动品牌是必争之地,如何在自家品牌内定义自己的跑步鞋,是每个品牌的重要一环。且跑步领域对于品牌有着庞大的销售业绩贡献,也是品牌宣扬自身理念的渠道。作为top 2运动装备制造商,耐克几乎横跨所有运动项目领域,但之前在跑步这个细分领域,耐克并没有很强的领导优势。

专业跑鞋如:New Balance,Saucony,Mizuno 或者Asics在跑者心目中占据重要地位,Asics一度被称为跑鞋之王,它们都有着历史悠久的跑鞋底蕴,兼具优秀的技术支撑。但很多都一直平民大众有"最后1公里"的距离。

跑步作为可参与人口最多的运动,耐克自然不会放过这个硕大的市场,于是,野心勃勃的的breaking 2计划提升了日常。耐克组建了一个顶级团队,包括世界一流的生物力学专家、设计师、材料工程师、营养学家及心理学家,并选择了3名运动员:世界纪录保持者基普乔格;厄立特里亚田径运动员Tadese和埃塞俄比亚选手Desisa,目的是尝试突破人类极限——全程马拉松42.195公里突破2小时,并将其命名为Breaking2。我后来算了下,这几乎是全程是在以400米的速度跑步而不减速。想想也觉得很不可思议。

16年柏马上,贝克勒穿着Zoom Vaporfly的前身,跑出了2h3m3s。17年5.6,意大利米兰蒙F1赛车场,3名破2计划的选手无一人进入2h大关,最好成绩仍为马拉松之王基普乔格的2:00:25。已无限逼近2h,但仍一步之遥破。但Nike当初的目的已经达到——Nike ZoomX Vaporfly 4%跑鞋一战成名。自此之后,Nike跑鞋深受职业马拉松运动员和大众精英跑者青睐。为何取名4%?Nike后来解释说:脚穿Zoom Vaporfly 4%技术跑鞋的运动员,跑步时能量消耗减少了4%。于是,4%一时间圈粉无数,拥趸众多。

NIKE跑鞋帝国的四大系列

Zoom(zoom x) 系列

Zoom是Nike旗下应用最为广泛的一项缓震科技,尤其以篮球鞋的运用为人所熟知。ZoomX 并不是Zoom Air 一样的空气气垫,而是以Pebax® 塑料作为原材料打造,是一种全新的泡棉缓震科技。只有传统发泡缓震材质重量的1/3,能量回馈率高达85%,而传统跑鞋的能量回馈在40~60%之间。Zoom以快速灵活的回馈性、即时缓震的效果著称,通过在跑鞋中底植入Zoom气垫,与中底的缓震材料结合,从而达到一个良好的缓震感。

ZoomX以其科技含量大到登峰造极的水准, 在过去数年统治了全球各大马拉松赛场。长跑皇帝基普乔格穿着ZoomX 科技加持的Vaporfly Elite 在去年柏马打破世界纪录(虽然距离破2只差一步),18年,全球范围内知名马拉松赛事中,64%的冠军是脚穿ZoomX Vaporfly 4%。事实上,在国内外重量级马拉松赛事中,第一集团的精英运动员总是穿着一水儿的ZoomX Vaporfly 4%,一道独特的风景线。而今年箱根驿传的赛场上更有近一半(41%)的选手选择了Vaporfly 4% 作为自己的战靴。尤其值得一提的是,就连阿迪赞助的学院里都有不少人脚穿4%,可见其魅力之大,拥趸之多。

Pegasus系列

Pegasus,即"飞马", Pegasus是希腊神话中一双带有翅膀的白色飞马,是众神梦寐以求的坐骑,而Pegasus系列是耐克最古老的跑鞋系列,自1983年诞生以来,经过三十几代的更迭,收获拥趸无数。目前已出到36代,是Nike旗下销量最高、延续时间最长的跑鞋系列,也是Zoom系列的代表之作。

Pegasus 36采用工程网布鞋面,相比上一代,它在前掌和中足部分提升了透气孔的数量,Pegasus一直都很厚实,夏天透气性不足。Pegasus 36继续采用了五孔的鞋带设计,搭配Flywire飞线,将鞋舌设计成了一片式,没有加厚内衬,脚背活动空间更灵活。后跟呈锥形且上扬,远离跟腱,减少磨损。内置一块TPU材料,外贴一块热塑性材料,稳定性做到了极致。中底采用Cashlon材质和Zoom Air全掌气垫的组合。这种材料减震效果明显,双脚能感觉到较明显的柔软和下陷,但缺点是它的密度较低,支撑性不足。大底则沿用了全橡胶。所以Pegasus系列一直以耐久性著称,抓地力和耐磨性都很优异。

Lunar系列

Lunar技术是Nike主打的一项缓震科技,尤其是在跑鞋领域被运用得更为广泛。源于登月计划中宇航员太空行走方式的启迪,当时的研发人员从观察航天人在月球表面行走的情景中汲取灵感,通过一种类似材料折叠回弹的原理,从而设计出该项中底技术,在08年推出之时Lunar也将登月科技作为宣传的重点。所以Lunar系列也被称为"登月系列"。

比较常见的Lunar属于发泡EVA材料,比传统的phylon泡棉轻30%,并且更加地柔软而富有弹性。搭载Lunar技术的跑鞋可以带来极好的缓震体验。可以通过不同区域的不同密度的褶皱将外部的冲击更平均地分配到整个足底,从而避免和减少了局部的冲击对身体和双脚的伤害。Lunar是一把双刃剑:优点是又轻又软,因此是非常适合作为跑鞋的优质材料;然而缺点也非常突出,就是支撑性不够,因此一般采用Lunarlon材料的跑鞋需要进行双密度处理来达到增加支撑性的目的。

Free系列

Free系列也就是我们常听到的"赤足"系列,Nike想让跑者摆脱鞋袜的束缚,体验质感与温度给感官带来的刺激,让跑鞋成为双脚的"第二层肌肤"。展开来讲,0代表赤足,10代表穿鞋。3.0接近于赤足,灵活性最大,适合竞速,适合锻炼足部肌肉;7.0接近穿鞋,脚感舒适,适合长跑耐,缓震舒适。5.0 介于两者之间, 既灵活有舒适兼得但不出众 所以5.0的鞋最少。NIKE Free RN鞋面中加入了氨纶成分,以及Flywire飞线, flyknit技术的结合,为双脚创造出极佳的动态贴合感。flyknit技术最大的功效就是能够帮助运动鞋减重,这是继nike推出Flywire后的又一次鞋面工艺技术的升级,鞋身几乎都是由线条纤维编而成,整体鞋面材料的裁剪减少了原材料的损耗和浪费,变得更加环保。也符合耐克better world的环保理念,同时不用缝合线,也保证了科技感。Flyknit技术是革命性科技,脚感十分轻盈,像袜子一样贴合双脚,还能兼顾双脚承压部位的支撑性,同时加强了鞋内的空气流通性,改善透气性不佳的性能,带来更好的跑步体验。鞋面采用Flyknit材质的同时加入了弹性纱线设计,不但让鞋子更加轻盈,同时也让双脚拥有更加舒适的贴合感和包覆感;让跑者在跑步过程中时刻保持清爽不捂脚。

React系列

React本质上是一种中底泡棉,与主流的Phylon、Lunarlon 相比,React摒弃了原有的EVA 材质,由全新化工配方制成。nike官方宣称它集「柔软、回弹、轻质、耐久」四特性于一体,历时3年打造。四个特性看上去有点矛盾,拿脚感来说,一般中底材料要么软,要么是硬弹,柔软和回弹结合起来显得有些差强人意。从身边反馈来看,软还是boost软但回弹性确实很棒。未来几年会是Nike在跑鞋领域狙击叫板boost的主力战将。Nike今年才正式将React运用到跑鞋上,但一登场便吸睛无数:那种脚踩海绵般的Q弹,一片好评,成为去年最具话题性的科技跑鞋。此后接连推出了Odyssey React、React Element 87、Moon Racer以及Rise React Flyknit LMTD 等多款搭载React缓震科技的跑鞋。

总结

从自身来讲,一定要好好训练,才对得起这个价格,我也相信这双鞋会帮助我在新的比赛中实现新的PB。从公司来讲,个人觉得NEXT%是Nike新的里程碑式的产品。Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%在伦敦刚刚上市就被抢购一空便是明证。

耐克一直都在讲:消费者体验的重要性,这几年也确实有着更激进的变化(相比阿迪的错失好局),用很Nike的方式来和全世界说明什么才是"耐克式"的消费者体验:把你口袋的钱全拿了,而且还能让你心甘情愿地觉得"幸运",还不断感谢。

作为跑者,生逢Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%可以算作一大幸事,好了,训练去了~

Part 4

There's an old saying: clothes make the man, a saddle makes the horse, and even the Buddha needs his gilding. For a runner — an athlete — nothing matters more than your body, and after that, your gear.

On April 25, 2019, the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% — the upgrade to the wildly popular Nike ZoomX Vaporfly 4% — officially dropped in London at $275, roughly ¥1,850. The moment it hit shelves in Greater China, I pulled the trigger on a pair to feel out the fastest running shoe on the planet for myself.

Before this, whether racing or training, I basically ran in ASICS. As a die-hard ASICS loyalist I'd tried plenty of other shoes too, but after lacing up the ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%, one word said it all: stunning. It reminded me of something a friend once told me after running in the ZoomX-equipped Nike Pegasus 35 Turbo: "There are two eras in my life as a runner — before ZoomX, and after."

At $275, it's the most expensive running shoe I know of. But if you absolutely must own the best pair out there, put the money into the brand-new ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%.

This piece has three parts: an intro to the ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% (NEXT% from here on); the origin story of the Vaporfly 4% and NEXT%; and a look at Nike's running-shoe lineup.

The Fastest Shoe on the Planet — ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%

The NEXT% is a reworked Vaporfly 4%. Before Nike launched this new-generation ZoomX shoe, the media had been calling it the "Vaporfly 5%" — meaning it went one step beyond last year's 4%, pushing runners one step closer to the limits of human performance. Nike later announced the name would be the ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%, carrying the idea that "the road ahead is infinite; the next 1% will always be out in front of you."

That "4%" comes from lab testing: compared to the previous fastest retail racing shoe, the Zoom Streak 6, the Vaporfly 4% cut the energy cost of running by 4%. Four percent sounds tiny, but for a 3-hour marathoner that's a six-minute improvement, and for a 4-hour runner it's close to eight minutes. You can see why people lost their minds over it.

So what exactly did the NEXT% improve?

Vaporweave upper

Nike leaned on feedback from world champions when designing the NEXT%. Shalane Flanagan told Nike that at Boston she'd run into a downpour, and once the shoe soaked up the rain the added weight slowed her down; Kipchoge, after Berlin, said he wanted better traction to handle wet race conditions. So Nike's design team used a new material called Vaporweave for the upper for the first time — a cicada-wing-thin fabric, lighter and more breathable than Flyknit, and, crucially, one that resists soaking up sweat and rain during a race, staying airy and dry for the long haul.

Redesigned lacing eyelets

The NEXT%'s lace eyelets were reworked to relieve pressure across the top of the foot — a subtle-looking tweak that pays off enormously over long distances. Mo Farah was a big fan of this one.

Added foam padding

The Achilles tendon at the back of the lower leg is one of the areas a runner most needs to protect. The NEXT% adds a thin layer of cushioning foam wrapping the foot, guarding the Achilles against friction and irritation over long miles.

Lower heel-to-toe drop, thicker midsole

The heel-to-toe offset drops from the previous 11mm to the NEXT%'s 8mm; a lower drop gives the wearer a more stable ride and stronger energy return. Nike also increased the overall midsole thickness — lab work combined with testing on multiple elite athletes showed this meaningfully boosts energy return.

15% more ZoomX foam, carbon plate retained

The NEXT%'s sole is thicker than the 4%'s, snapping you off the ground faster, springier and more cushioned. It keeps the full-length spoon-shaped carbon-fiber plate and stiffens it up, delivering sustained propulsion over the long haul. The midsole foam grew by 15% with almost no change in weight. More ZoomX means both better cushioning and outstanding energy return.

Compared to the 4%, Nike also reworked the outsole — a deep-lugged tread pattern reminiscent of a car tire, with a wavy design. That, too, came from those champions' feedback: for better grip on wet and puddled roads, and the deeper grooves give the wearer a more stable feel through turns, letting runners move laterally with more agility and control when cutting corners.

Is the NEXT% a PB machine for everyday runners, or a shoe you can't tame? The debate never ends. Honestly, straight up: ZoomX has always drawn criticism for how much it deforms and how short its lifespan is. Nike didn't improve that this time around: because of the full-length carbon plate's propulsion, this shoe isn't suited to anyone without proper training. Like the 4%, the NEXT% is a race-only shoe, better suited to higher-level runners — say, sub-4-hour marathoners. For slower runners, it may not be a great fit at all.

That said, plenty of people probably wouldn't want to burn one out pounding the pavement every day anyway, incredible as the ride feels. For daily training and everyday wear, the Pegasus is plenty — versus the 4%, it's just missing the carbon plate. The Pegasus Turbo currently goes for ¥1,399 on the official site, and cheaper on the secondary market. If you've got a normal foot shape, just buy your usual size.

The NEXT% — the Classic Product of Nike's Breaking2 Project

Running is contested territory for every sportswear brand, and how a brand defines its own running shoe within its lineup is a crucial piece of the puzzle. Running contributes huge sales, and it's also a channel for a brand to broadcast its philosophy. As one of the top-two athletic-gear makers, Nike spans nearly every sport — but in the running niche it never had much of a leadership edge.

Specialist running brands like New Balance, Saucony, Mizuno, and ASICS held a hallowed place in runners' hearts — ASICS was once crowned the king of running shoes — all of them with deep running heritage and excellent technical backing. But a lot of them always kept a "last mile" of distance from the mass market.

Running is the sport with the largest participation base of all, so of course Nike wasn't going to let that enormous market slip away. Enter the audacious Breaking2 project. Nike assembled a top-tier team — world-class biomechanists, designers, materials engineers, nutritionists, and psychologists — and picked three athletes: world-record holder Eliud Kipchoge; Eritrean runner Zersenay Tadese; and Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa. The goal was to push past a human limit: the full 42.195km marathon under two hours. They called it Breaking2. I later did the math — that's essentially running the whole thing at 400m-lap pace without slowing down. Even thinking about it feels unreal.

At the 2016 Berlin Marathon, Kenenisa Bekele wore an early forerunner of the Zoom Vaporfly and ran 2:03:03. On May 6, 2017, at the Monza F1 circuit in Italy, none of the three Breaking2 athletes cracked the two-hour barrier — the best time was still the marathon king Kipchoge's 2:00:25. Agonizingly close to sub-2, one step short. But Nike had already achieved its real goal: the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly 4% made its name in a single stroke. From then on, Nike's running shoes became the darling of pro marathoners and elite amateurs alike. Why the "4%" name? Nike later explained: athletes wearing the Zoom Vaporfly 4% burned 4% less energy while running. And just like that, "4%" won over legions of fans.

The Four Big Lines of Nike's Running Empire

Zoom (ZoomX) line

Zoom is Nike's most widely used cushioning tech, best known from its basketball shoes. ZoomX isn't an air unit like Zoom Air — it's a brand-new foam cushioning tech built from Pebax® plastic. It weighs just a third of traditional foam cushioning while delivering up to 85% energy return, versus 40–60% for a conventional running shoe. Zoom is known for fast, responsive feedback and instant cushioning; embedding a Zoom air unit in the midsole, paired with the surrounding cushioning material, produces a well-tuned ride.

ZoomX, with tech taken to an absolute peak, has ruled the world's major marathons for years running. The marathon king Kipchoge broke the world record at last year's Berlin Marathon (one step short of sub-2) in the ZoomX-equipped Vaporfly Elite. In 2018, 64% of the champions at the world's marquee marathons wore the ZoomX Vaporfly 4%. In fact, at the heavyweight marathons at home and abroad, the elite lead pack was always a sea of matching ZoomX Vaporfly 4%s — a distinctive sight all its own. And at this year's Hakone Ekiden, nearly half (41%) of the runners chose the Vaporfly 4% as their weapon of choice. Worth noting: even at Adidas-sponsored programs, plenty of runners laced up the 4% — proof of just how magnetic it is, and how deep its following runs.

Pegasus line

Pegasus — the winged white horse of Greek myth, the mount every god dreamed of riding. The Pegasus line is Nike's oldest running series, born in 1983 and, across more than thirty generations, having won countless devotees. It's now up to its 36th generation, Nike's best-selling and longest-running shoe line, and the flagship of the Zoom family.

The Pegasus 36 uses an engineered mesh upper, adding more ventilation holes across the forefoot and midfoot versus the previous version — the Pegasus has always run thick, with weak breathability in summer. The 36 keeps the five-eyelet lacing paired with Flywire, moves to a one-piece tongue with no thickened lining, and gives the top of the foot more room to move. The heel is cone-shaped and flared upward, away from the Achilles to reduce wear. A TPU piece inside plus a thermoplastic layer outside push stability to the max. The midsole pairs Cushlon foam with a full-length Zoom Air unit. That combo cushions noticeably — you can really feel the softness and give underfoot — but its downside is low density and insufficient support. The outsole stays full rubber, so the Pegasus line has always been known for durability, with excellent grip and abrasion resistance.

Lunar line

Lunar is a headline cushioning tech from Nike, used especially widely in running shoes. It was inspired by the way astronauts walk in space during moon missions — the R&D team drew from watching astronauts move across the lunar surface, and using a principle akin to a folding, rebounding material, designed the midsole tech. When it launched in 2008, Lunar leaned on that moon-landing theme in its marketing, which is why the line is also known as the "moon-landing" series.

The more common Lunar is a foamed EVA material, 30% lighter than traditional Phylon foam and softer, springier too. A Lunar-equipped shoe delivers excellent cushioning: through varied densities and folds in different zones, it distributes external impact more evenly across the whole footbed, avoiding and reducing the localized shock that harms the body and feet. Lunar is a double-edged sword: the upside is light and soft, making it superb running-shoe material; the downside, just as glaring, is a lack of support, which is why shoes built on Lunarlon usually need dual-density treatment to add stability.

Free line

The Free line is the "barefoot" series we all know. Nike wanted runners to shed the constraints of shoes and socks, to feel the sensation and warmth against the skin, turning the shoe into a "second skin" for the foot. The scale runs 0 for barefoot to 10 for fully shod. The 3.0 is close to barefoot — most flexible, suited to speed work and building foot strength; the 7.0 is close to fully shod, comfortable underfoot, suited to long-distance endurance with cushioned comfort; the 5.0 sits between the two, both flexible and comfortable but master of neither, which is why the 5.0 sells the least. The Nike Free RN's upper blends in spandex, plus Flywire and Flyknit tech, to create an outstanding dynamic fit for the foot. Flyknit's greatest strength is shaving weight off the shoe — the next upper-construction upgrade after Nike introduced Flywire. The shoe body is almost entirely woven from thread fibers, and cutting the upper this way reduces raw-material waste, making it greener too. It fits Nike's "Better World" sustainability ethos, and going stitchless keeps the high-tech feel intact. Flyknit is revolutionary tech: incredibly light underfoot, hugging the foot like a sock while still supporting the foot's load-bearing zones, and improving airflow inside the shoe to fix poor breathability, for a better ride. The Flyknit upper also weaves in elastic yarn, which not only makes the shoe lighter but gives the foot a more comfortable, wrapping fit — keeping runners cool and their feet un-stifled throughout a run.

React line

React is essentially a midsole foam. Compared to mainstream Phylon and Lunarlon, React ditches the old EVA material for a brand-new chemical formula. Nike officially claims it packs four traits into one — soft, springy, light, durable — after three years of development. Those four traits look a little contradictory: take the ride, where a midsole material is usually either soft or stiff-and-springy, so combining soft with springy comes off a touch underwhelming. From the feedback around me, on softness Boost is still softer, but React's rebound really is excellent. Over the next few years it'll be Nike's frontline soldier taking aim at Boost in the running space. Nike only officially brought React to running shoes this year, but it grabbed eyeballs the moment it arrived: that sponge-underfoot springiness drew rave reviews and became last year's most talked-about tech running shoe. Nike went on to roll out the Odyssey React, React Element 87, Moon Racer, and Rise React Flyknit LMTD, among other React-cushioned shoes.

Wrapping Up

Personally, I've got to train hard to do this price tag justice, and I believe this pair will help me set a new PB at my next race. From a company standpoint, I think the NEXT% is a new milestone product for Nike. That it sold out the instant it went on sale in London is proof enough.

Nike has always talked about the importance of the consumer experience, and these last few years it really has made more aggressive moves (versus Adidas fumbling a winning hand), showing the world in a very Nike way what the "Nike-style" consumer experience is: they take every last dollar out of your pocket — and somehow leave you feeling "lucky" to hand it over, thanking them the whole way.

As a runner, getting to live in the age of the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% counts as a real stroke of luck. Alright — off to train.
