"Suning, 58 Daojia, Meituan, Moji Weather, AutoNavi (Amap), Momo, Sina Weibo, Caixin Media, Yicai, AcFun, Meizu, Xiami Music... 'Daddy Ma' and his Alibaba empire have between them backed nearly half of China's internet. This is a company steeped in wuxia culture — and beyond buying up companies of its own, it has also incubated one of the great dynasties of the venture world: the Alibaba mafia."
Look across the ranks of these Alibaba alumni and you'll find every kind of exit: some have retreated from the fray, some have turned founder themselves, and a whole cohort have either launched name-brand investment firms or reinvented themselves as angel investors, playing the game with real flair. Didi angel investor Wang Gang, Amoeba Capital's Li Zhiguo, Fenghe Capital's Wu Jiong... they may have missed out on Alibaba's own wealth-creation bonanza, but every one of them now carries the "ex-Alibaba" badge into the arena and has carved out territory of their own.
Wei Zhe (David Wei): Chairman of Vision Knight Capital
Bio: Wei Zhe (David Wei), founding partner and chairman of Vision Knight Capital. Born in 1970, Wei was barely past 20 when he became secretary to Guan Jinsheng, the "father of Chinese securities." Over the next decade-plus he moved from finance to consulting to the China presidency of a multinational — a smooth, upward run the whole way. In November 2006 he became president of Alibaba.com and an executive vice president of Alibaba Group; a year later, the Alibaba B2B business he ran went public in Hong Kong. Before Alibaba he had served as CEO of Alibaba and China CEO of B&Q. He formally joined Alibaba in November 2006 as executive vice president of the group and president of its B2B e-commerce arm. In 2011, Wei left Alibaba and soon after built Vision Knight Capital. Earlier still, he had been general manager of the investment banking division at Orient Securities, and a corporate finance manager at Coopers & Lybrand (now part of PwC).
Investment style: give the portfolio company free management consulting first, then talk about the investment. Wei says that over his career he first learned strategic architecture, then picked up execution at B&Q, came to understand corporate vision at Alibaba, and finally rounded it out with the question of values.
Focus areas: e-commerce, the internet, consumer retail that can be lifted by e-commerce, and B2B services that can be optimized through IT.
Deals: 500wan (500.com), Bamboo Travel, Chelun, Fangdd, Zhong'ao Daojia, Liuyi Xingkong, and others.
Lou Jun: Director at IDG Capital

Bio: Wu Jiong was part of the founding teams of Yahoo, Hanting (Huazhu), and Alibaba, and is the architect and patent holder of Yahoo's search engine technology. He joined Northern Light Venture Capital in January 2008. As one of Alibaba's angel investors, Wu founded Alibaba's US subsidiary and served as Alibaba's CTO from May 2000 to December 2007. He also worked on the post-merger integration of Alibaba and Yahoo China. Wu joined Yahoo in the US in 1996, leading the company's search and e-commerce technology R&D team; he was the chief architect of Yahoo's directory search engine and many of its other applications. Before Yahoo, Wu was a development manager in Oracle's server technology division. His work in the field of "semi-structured data search" earned him a US national technology patent.
Investment style: wait for the rabbit to come to the tree — back founders he already rates highly, or good projects introduced by people he knows. As a rule he tries to invest only within his own circle of acquaintances and friends, or friends of friends — the shorter the distance, the better.
Focus areas: internet, technology, mobile health.
Deals: Jumei, Guahao.com (WeDoctor), Dalong.com, Ubox, Guanghua Huocai Media, Dingding.com, Boyibang, Mtime, CXA Group, and others.
Li Zhiguo: Partner at Amoeba Capital

As product manager, he led the development of one of Alibaba's most important products to date, "TrustPass" (Chengxintong). He was the earliest of the Alibaba founders to strike out on his own — leaving and returning more than once. In 2004 he quit to start the local-life search site Koubei, which Alibaba acquired in 2006. In 2010 Li left Alibaba again. From 2010 on, he invested as an angel in Wacai, Kuaidi Dache, Mogujie, Xiao'ao Games, Huaban, Maimiao Data, and other startups; along the way, he and two other partners built Amoeba Capital. In 2014 he formally became CEO of Wacai.

Focus areas: e-commerce, lifestyle consumption, financial payments, gaming and animation, mobile internet, education.

Bio: Wang Gang spent more than ten years at Alibaba, where he ran the B2B Beijing region, the Alipay merchant business unit, and the group's organizational development, under the code name "Lao Dan." He left Alibaba in 2012. Wang was Didi's earliest angel investor; beyond Didi, he has incubated and backed more than forty Chinese startups and more than ten American ones.
Investment style: years at Alibaba gave him strong platform instincts and rich commercial experience. He likes to get at the essence of a business and enjoys sitting down with a CEO to hash out competitive strategy and refine the business model. He invests at the angel stage and puts a premium on the CEO's personal qualities and charisma. Three traits matter most to him: (1) Are you smart enough — can you extrapolate from one thing to another? (2) Are you upright, do you have leadership? He'll back a CEO with a touch of the devil in them. (3) Do I like you?
Focus areas: food and beverage, mobility, rural, finance.
Deals: Didi, Youyou Zuche, Paopao Jianzhi, Meicha Zhaopin, Zhuliangtian, Singularity Finance, Baobao Kuaixian, Wanneng Xiaoge, and others.

Before Matrix, Xiong was a product manager at Alibaba, responsible for B2B paid products (TrustPass) and enterprise e-commerce (domain services). Before that, he was a product manager at Tencent, in charge of design and planning for Tencent's community products — giving him solid experience in both community and enterprise e-commerce products.
Investment style: he says every investment has to be considered on two levels. First, opportunity cost — in a sense, opportunity cost determines the return. Second, investment risk is tightly bound up with the business model and operating model. He believes that if a company is in good operating shape, is product- and technology-driven, and has a team with dreams and vision, then there's always room to invest.
Focus areas: mobile internet, enterprise services.
Deals: Beisen, Xiaoshouyi, Zhaosuliao, Easemob, and others.

With nearly a decade of investing experience and a rich background in entrepreneurship and corporate operations, he has played a key role in accelerating companies' growth and taking them public.

After leaving Alibaba in June 2014, he raised a 200-million-yuan fund — Zonghai Capital — and began making angel- and pre-A-round investments.
Investment style: weights the team heavily, believing the team comes before the business model. A team's passion, breadth of ambition, and ability to organize and execute are all central to his decision to invest.
Focus areas: early-stage investing in mobile internet, O2O, cloud computing, smart devices, health, and related fields.
