How Turkey Became China's Hottest Travel Destination

Translated from the Chinese original, first published on WeChat「世像」on November 28, 2015.

Turkey's travel boom in China came down to two main factors:

  1. Turkey genuinely is a lot of fun (the objective factor).

  2. Visas got easy to obtain, and it carries serious bragging-rights cachet (the subjective factor).

Honestly, reason No. 2 is the bigger one — there's no shortage of fun countries out there — so let me explain No. 2 first and come back to No. 1.

It's common knowledge that traveling abroad on a Chinese passport is hard: too few visa-free countries, too few visa-on-arrival ones.

Picture it: you've finally got a rare stretch of vacation, but every scenic spot back home is a heaving sea of humanity, a million-strong army fording the river. So you think, fine, let's go abroad — but where? No property deed, no vehicle registration, no couple hundred thousand yuan in the bank to put up as collateral, no six months of stable income statements. Here's what's left on the menu:

Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia. These Southeast Asian countries have basically been occupied by the Chinese tourist infantry — some of the locals can even speak Mandarin now. I once ran into a local kid whose Cantonese was smoother than mine.

So most travel lovers have already been. Which means the cachet of these countries has steadily dropped to low, and even the people who haven't been don't much want to go anymore.

Cachet index ★

The Maldives — easy to get to, and I'd love to go. But it's just too expensive, and going solo is a total mood-killer.

Cachet index ★★★★

The African countries — Kenya, Tanzania and the like: even if you offered someone a free trip, not everyone would take it. Mauritius is the one exception.

Cachet index ★★★

Tuvalu, Niue (not New York), Samoa, Micronesia, Burundi — you can barely even find them on a map, and one look at the round-trip airfare will give you a heart attack. On top of that, once you're back and you post to Weibo or your feed and tell your relatives, friends, coworkers, and girlfriends about it, not one of them will have ever heard of the place. They'll think you got trafficked there.

Cachet index ★★

Ahh — and then, right about now, you spot Turkey.

Applying for a Turkish visa used to be a monumental hassle, harder than getting into Zhongnanhai. But one night in mid-2013, pitch-black, can't-see-your-own-hand dark, on a cold and empty street, two silhouettes slowly drew close and murmured to each other: Turkey's opened up e-visas, you hear?

The word spread fast, and people learned that all you needed was a valid Korean visa — log on to a website, pay $30 (it's since gone up to $60), and you could apply for a one-month Turkish tourist visa.

And a Korean visa is very easy to get.

Turkey borders Europe. The streets are full of tall, handsome white guys and doe-eyed European girls. Compared to Southeast Asia or Africa, the cachet is way higher — ★★★★ at a minimum. Stand in Istanbul and you can claim you've reached Europe!

And it's not even that pricey!

The case pretty much makes itself.

Grab it with both hands, and grip hard with both. Turkey's own credentials really are the full package — tall, rich, handsome, and rugged to boot.

I've written a couple of pieces introducing travel in Turkey; let me quote a passage from my own earlier work:

The Creator lavished too many treasures on this country straddling Europe and Asia: the magnificent ruins left behind by the Ottoman, Byzantine, and Roman empires; the natural marvels of Pamukkale and the fairy chimneys, carved as if by the hand of a god; the romance of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean — all of it leaves a deep impression on any traveler.

Talk is cheap, so here's proof.

(Figure in original: İstiklal Avenue, forever bustling.)

Turkey says: we've got a long history and countless ancient sites, retro charm and heartfelt feeling, plus some seriously kickass mosques.

The many Southeast Asian nations bow their heads — then think it over and stubbornly refuse to concede, insisting: we in Southeast Asia have beaches. Do you?

Turkey swings a backhand slap: we don't just have a sea — we've got the AEGEAN! SEA!

The Southeast Asian nations cover their faces and argue softly: actually, our places have a certain fresh, artsy vibe. Don't believe us? Just look at Chiang Mai, Mui Ne…

Before the words are even out —

(Figure in original: a fresh, artsy Turkish street scene.)

Turkey lets out a cold laugh and doesn't bother to reply.

The Southeast Asian nations glance at each other, and Nepal — the red-faced fellow with a khukuri knife on his hip — suddenly stands up straight: we've got snow-capped mountains!

Turkey smiles scornfully.

(Figure in original: Turkey's snow-capped mountains and grasslands.)

Turkey says slowly: those mountains of yours charge a park-entry fee, you've got to hire porters, and you spend a fortune to exhaust yourself half to death. Ours, you just show up — walk a few steps and you're in a boundless forested snowscape.

Turkey presses forward step by step: had enough yet? Now I'll show you what I'm really made of ~~

(Figure in original: paragliding.)

(Figure in original: Pamukkale.)

A fist flies out; before anyone can brace, Turkey's moves come faster and faster.

(Figure in original: Cappadocia — a hot-air balloon ride you have to experience once in your life.)

Before Turkey can follow up, Thailand and Vietnam spot an opening and rush in together to pincer it: we've got great food and beautiful women!

Turkey instantly dodges, snaps into a "white crane spreads its wings" stance, and fights on both fronts at once.

(Figure in original: Turkish cuisine.)

(Figure in original: Turkish folk song-and-dance and belly dancing.)

The Southeast Asian crowd, propping each other up, drifts off — unwilling, but beaten.

Turkey draws a breath, turns to face you, and breaks into a smile.

Then says, slowly:

Kid, you've been standing off to the side watching this whole time. Were you looking for me?
