It's a volcanic island soaking in the ocean: the land rises sharply in the south, crests in the middle, and slopes gently down toward the north. Apart from one short stretch of southern coast, the whole island is ringed by coral reef. Waves have spent ages grinding down the coral and shells, and the result is a coastline of long, soft, powder-white sand.

The sand here is fine, the sea views easy on the eyes. The famous beaches include Trou aux Biches, Mon Choisy, and La Cuvette up north; Poste La Fayette & Roches Noires and Palmar–Belle Mare in the east; and Souillac, Riambel, Pointe aux Roches, and Tamarin down south.

Down in the southern village of Chamarel, the "Seven Coloured Earths" park is the only place on the planet where you'll find seven distinct colors of soil in one spot — a marvel left behind by volcanic ash.

To the north sits the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, laid out in 1767, where a French botanist first planted the species he loved before it grew into today's 800-plus-mu park.

Palau is a curious place. Its waters are always calm, and yet it's where typhoons are born. When Chinese TV runs a typhoon forecast, there's always that line — "the typhoon that formed over the waters east of the Philippines is currently moving west and is expected to make landfall at such-and-such time and place." That "waters east of the Philippines" is exactly the region Palau belongs to.

Long Beach is a spot you've probably seen in countless ad shots. It's called Long Beach because between two neighboring islands, about two kilometers apart, lies a broad corridor of white sand. At high tide it hides beneath the sea, showing only as a band of pale green water; at low tide it turns into a white land bridge you can walk across on foot from one island to the other.

As you draw closer, Long Beach hits you with its sheer beauty: across the wide expanse of blue, between two lonely green islands, a graceful moon-white arc curves like a rainbow. The fierce afternoon equatorial sun makes the sand blindingly white, almost too bright to look at.

The sea seems to swallow the sun's edge and open its own deep embrace — blue to the core, cleanly blue, grandly blue, blue without a shred of timidity.

Palau is famous not just for its undersea landscapes — recognized by oceanographers as the greatest of the world's seven underwater wonders — but for the views above water too. Its sea carries seven distinct colors, and every traveler who's seen it comes away in awe.

The reason: Palau's water is crystal-clear and unpolluted, and its seabed is wildly varied. One moment there's dark reef, the next a jumble of bright soft and hard coral, or fine sand, or ash deposited by ancient volcanoes — and the clear water holds up all of it to the surface without holding anything back, giving you those gorgeous colors. You can get a visa on arrival when you fly into Nepal, and with a return ticket you can leave the country normally. If you go overland, though, you'll need to sort out the visa in advance.

Visa-free or visa-on-arrival for China, and you can clear Chinese exit control: Jeju (South Korea), Indonesia, Saipan, Maldives, Jordan, Bahrain, Fiji, Palau, Tuvalu, Seychelles, Samoa, Mauritius, Comoros, Georgia, Micronesia, and others.

Countries That Offer China E-Visas

You'll need to arrange the e-visa ahead of time, and you can clear Chinese exit control: Singapore, Turkey, Australia, Qatar, UAE, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and others.

Countries That Grant China Visa-Free or Visa-on-Arrival — But Where You Can't Clear Chinese Exit Control Without a Visa

Laos, Kenya, Tanzania, Nepal, Dominica, Lebanon, Togo, Costa Rica, Bangladesh, Mozambique, and others.

Whether it's a mutual visa waiver that hasn't formally taken effect yet or a visa-on-arrival arrangement, you can still run into the problem of Chinese border control not letting you through. In other words, even if the destination country grants Chinese citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival treatment, you may be unable to leave China because border control won't clear you. In that case you'll need to go through the usual visa formalities — unless you're holding a valid visa for a third country and transiting through it to reach your destination.

For Visa-on-Arrival, Enter Through an Airport

With visa-on-arrival, keep in mind that once you land, on top of showing your valid Chinese passport, you must also hold a return ticket in order to pay the entry tax and clear immigration smoothly.

Also, visa-on-arrival is generally only offered at airports. That means flying directly from a Chinese airport to the destination country's airport. If you arrive by sea or overland, visa-on-arrival may not apply — it comes down to each country's specific rules.
